A Little About Us

Liverpool Through the Eyes
of a Child
A Walking Tour for Children

This program was developed through a community health active living grant.
It is the Museums way of introducing some healthy activity into the lives of youth
through programming which is not sport related. Visitors today are able to access a walking tour of Liverpool focusing on many wonderful Historical facts. The Museum decided to expand on this concept and create a walking tour which focuses on changes noticeable to children and gets them to ask questions about the changes that they see.

Let’s close our eyes and try to picture what it must have looked like, right where you are sitting, before any of the first settlers came here. What do you see and hear?”
- forrest
- Mersey River
- birds
- animals
“There was somebody living here. Who was that?”
- the Mi’kmaq

“Now let’s move ahead to when Simeon came here.  What did the property and the surrounding area look like? Look around. What would have been here? There are three  of nine children we would like to introduce you to who lived at the Perkins’ house.”

“Now we are at Dr. Farish’s house. Dr. Farish built this house and there was a little girl who lived here.  Her name was Bertha and her younger brother James. When James grew up he became a Doctor like his Dad and when Bertha grew up she married a young man and stayed right here in town.  Can you imaging Bertha and James coming out to play?”

“Now we are standing in front of Dr. Jordan Smith’s house. This is where Richard and his little sister Emma lived. Their dad built this house just over 100 years ago.  Can you imaging Richard and Emma running into their Dad’s office and sitting on the verandah watching the horses and buggies going by? Probably running errands for their Mom. See how much of the street has taken over their front yard where they used to play?”

“Here is the old Post Office.  Can you see the difference between this and the old one?”

“As years went on and shipbuilding started you will see that a shipyard was set up on the Barss’ property. You can see the Barss house in the background.  Ships were being built everywhere along here.”
