Tourism: Changes, Impact, Opportunities
Note: This program is only available to grade 12
An interactive discussion of tourism in our area. We will explore the impact or tourism, both economic and social, in our community. Discussion will also include employment opportunities in this industry and the skills and knowledge needed for a tourism career. We will discuss industry standards for customer service and the impact that social networking is having on marketing the industry.

House of Haunts
Through the magic of technology, we introduce you to Simeon Perkins and his family. Watch Simeon materialize before your eyes as he rises from his bed or Elizabeth working in her pantry. Discover their stories using push buttons and questions. Where else can you meet eight friendly ghosts? Don’t miss the fun!

Early Medicine
See actual medical instruments from the 1700’s and hear how they were used by Perkins Family Physician, Dr. Falt. Using student volunteers, we’ll compare and contrast older Medieval medical treatments to Dr. Falt’s treatments and to todays treatments.

Mi’kmaq Medicine
For thousands of years the Mi’kmaq people have turned to nature to extract the medicinal properties of plants for both spiritual and personal healing. We will explore, using live and dried specimens, the local flora and fauna which are the basis of healing medicines for these early people. This program also includes an introduction to the medicine wheel and the talking stick.

Crime, Punishment and Justice
This program will review the changes in the criminal justice system from the time of the first European settlement of our area to the turn of the last century (1760 to 2000). Using Perkins Diary and other contemporary sources, students will compare and contrast the changes in our justice system and how it reflects the changes in our society. Note: This program is under review and may not be available upon request.

Evolution of the Mi’kmaq Culture
How did the early Mi’kmaq make a pot of soup? Discover the answer to this and more as we adventure our way into our Mi’kmaq diorama. Experience the feel of actual stone tools and how they were used in comparison to their modern day equivalents.

Lawn Bowls and Pall Mall
Lawn Bowls and Pall Mall (Croquet) were favourite outdoor activities in the 1700’s. Perhaps Simeon and Elizabeth played these games with their family on the Perkins House Lawn. Learn to play these games and even organize your own tournament. The Museum grounds are environmentally friendly. We are proud to say no pesticides or herbicides are used on our lawns or gardens.

Curious Curators
While exploring the Museum each student will choose and draw two artifacts - one being their favourite and the other being their least favourite. They will then share their drawings with their peers and discuss what they like and dislike about the artifacts they chose.

Knowledge Hunts
Your class will take part in the Great Queens County Museum/Perkins House Complex Knowledge Hunt. The questions will be based on the exhibits in the Museum. We can also tailor questions to match your lesson plans. Just call us to discuss the options.

Walking Tour: Liverpool Through the Eyes of a Child
This walking tour will detail changes in the street scape of Liverpool. Using old photographs and exploration students will compare and contrast life in Liverpool past and present. Each tour will be structured to the age of the group.

Walking Tour: The Stones Shall Speak
An Interpreter will lead your class through Liverpool’s Old Burial Ground. Using excerpts from the Perkins Diary you will discover the burial practices of the times. Why are some bodies buried in the middle of busy streets? Did you know children acted as pall bearers? Hear the tragic stories of some of our founding families.
